Food Resources

Food Pantries and Food Services

Food Pantries are often managed by Not-For-Profit Organizations or Church Groups.  Food pantries are funded by grants and private fundraising and many times are part of a larger network of food sources such as St. Louis Area Food Bank, with assigned grocery stores for regular pick up to stock the food bank.

Food Pantries carve out specific geographic areas served with qualifying partners for income and residency so that more people in need can be serviced with vital food supply.  Food bank participants are sometimes qualified by the local County Community Action Agency or the individual food pantry organization.  Most food pantries will serve people as a walk-in one time but then require participants to meet qualifying criteria by providing documentation of family members and family income.

Food panties can be organized to dispense boxes of food based on the family size, or can be set up as a food choice by participants who shop in the pantry themselves for items they will use based on points or volumes determined by the family size.  Most food banks assign participants specific days and times per month for clients to access food by assigned appointments or limited hours of being open on certain days of the week or month .
