This Mass is associated with Saint Luke, the patron saint of physicians and surgeons, whose feast day is October 18. White Masses were traditionally celebrated on the Feast of Saint Luke in hospitals, chapels, parish churches, cathedrals, and everywhere that health care workers routinely gathered with their chaplains. White Masses honor all those who work in health care – from nurses and physicians to lab workers. It takes its name from the white coat most commonly worn by those in the medical field. Archbishop Mitchell Rozanski is the celebrant and homilist at this Mass. The Archdiocese will follow the guidance of the city of St. Louis with regarding to mask requirements. We invite all first responders to wear uniforms, gather ahead of time in front of the Cathedral Basilica and process into the Cathedral at the beginning of the Mass. Special prayers will be offered for our first responders, and they will be recognized during the Mass. The Blue Mass is a Mass celebrated annually in the Catholic Church for those employed in the field of public safety, i.e. police officers, firefighters, 911 operators, EMS personnel, and all first responders. It gets its name from the blue uniforms worn by so many public safety personnel. The Mass dates back to 1934 and calls forth in us a greater awareness of and gratitude for the lives of those who serve us so faithfully.
