Relics of St. Bernadette on display in St. Louis

Display of her relics is part of a nationwide tour

A reliquary containing relics of St. Bernadette was on display July 8 at the Basilica of St. Louis, King of France (Old Cathedral) in St. Louis.

A Mass with a rite of reception of St. Bernadette’s relics was celebrated before veneration of the relics began. Dozens waited in line to kneel before the reliquary.

In 1858, 14-year-old Bernadette Soubirous lived in Lourdes in southern France when she saw Mary 18 times in a grotto, according to the website of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospitality North American Volunteers. She was canonized on Dec. 8, 1933, by Pope Pius XI.

There are more chances to visit the relics of St. Bernadette with events scheduled in the afternoon and evening July 8 at the Old Cathedral, July 9 at the Cardinal Rigali Center and July 10 back at the Old Cathedral.

More information about St. Bernadette’s relics and the schedule of events can be found at oldcathedralstl.org.
