A Life Transformed With Help through the Annual Catholic Appeal

Catherine, a young woman at age 19, came to Good Shepherd Children & Family Services' maternity shelter with her three-month-old baby. She was parenting without any family support. Catherine applied for jobs with the help of a tutor and the educational coordinator. She was hired in customer service at a local hotel. She met her goals while at Good Shepherd, saved to buy a car, and moved into her own apartment with her baby after six months. Social services like these through Catholic Charities are funded in part by the Annual Catholic Appeal.

From Christ Light of Nations School Scholarships

The Rivera Family has 8 children; 5 have graduated from Christ Light of the Nations School, two children are currently enrolled in the school. Mr. and Mrs. Rivera are hard-working Hispanic parents, however Mrs. Rivera had to stop working several years ago due to a life-threatening liver condition. Even then she continued with the help of her children to sell food on Sundays from the back of her car at Our Lady of Guadalupe parish to make extra money.

The whole Rivera family has always pulled together to provide for their family. She has gifted the staff at Christ Light of the Nations School over the years with produce from the truck farm where they work. She has collected clothes and household items for Hispanic families in need of help. Without assistance from the school through the Annual Catholic Appeal these children would not have received a Catholic Education.

Couple Says "I Do"

One grateful couple, Jim and Bonnie, gives high praise for their marriage preparation when they re-married in the Church. They were overwhelmed by the staff’s openness, sincerity and earnestness in assisting them on this journey. At first they were a little anxious about the process but eventually were overjoyed with the whole session. It was truly a very spiritual and unforgettable experience as it is for many. The Annual Catholic Appeal supports programs in parishes that invite and prepare couples who are seeking a Catholic marriage.
