About Sister Jean Durel: Throughout my life I have heard God’s call in varied and persistent ways. I am very grateful to my religious community for the many opportunities I’ve had to follow that call. I grew up in New Orleans, in the time of segregation, and though I didn’t realize it at the time, the seeds of a future life direction were being planted both by the injustice I was conscious of and by that which I unconsciously imbibed. The first years of my religious life, were spent in teaching. While chemistry still fascinates me, I felt God’s tug towards justice and peace ministry. The justice ministries that I have been involved in for the last 40 years have been quite varied and each has been rich in blessings and in learnings. The two years I spent in the mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico, working with CCVIs as part of a pastoral team were life-changing ones for me. Likewise, I feel very blessed for the years I spent on the U.S.-Mexico border working with sisters from other communities, in St. Louis working on a neighborhood project in south St. Louis, and now volunteering with the Interfaith Welcome Coalition in San Antonio, welcoming migrants on their journey. Finally, I am so grateful for the many friends I have — from hiking to yoga to social justice issues — who have stretched me and inspired me by their example to be and to do more than I thought I could.
