Ursuline, De Smet take honors in 'Hackathon'

Ursuline Academy placed second and De Smet Jesuit High School was honorable mention among 11 local teams competing in World Wide Technology's STEM Student Forum Hackathon. Members of the Ursuline team, which earned a $5,000 prize, were: seniors Mary Leritz, Lexie Schomaker, Jill Stinehart, Jessica Summers; juniors Reagan Becnel, Emerson Brazile, Megan Catlett and Allison Kohne; and sophomores Olivia Goldkamp and Anna Gonsalves. Representing the only all-girls school in the Hackathon, the team designed a virtual tour of the Ursuline campus and received praise as representatives of women in technology.

Niemann joins Fontbonne board

Fontbonne University has appointed Fontbonne alumna Juli Niemann to its board of trustees. Niemann graduated from Fontbonne in 1968 with bachelor's degrees in history and economics with minors in theology and philosophy, and her finance career has spanned more than 40 years. She is a previous member of Fontbonne's Council of Regents, a committee that builds relationships between Fontbonne and St. Louis businesses and community organizations. She has been involved with numerous charitable organizations over the years, co-authored a book and served as a financial expert on local media outlets.

Seminary grad gets nod

Pope Francis named Father Lawrence Sydney Nicasio, Kenrick-Glennon Seminary Class of 1989, as Bishop of Belize City-Belmopan, Belize. A teacher in Belize before entering the seminary, Bishop-Elect Nicasio has a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Cardinal Glennon College (1985) and a master of divinity degree from Kenrick School of Theology (1989). Since ordination in 1989, Bishop-Elect Nicasio has served in numerous parishes, as parish vicar of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Co-Cathedral in Belmopan and as president of the Diocesan Priest Association. He succeeds Bishop Dorick Wright, also an alumnus of Kenrick, of the ordination class of 1975.

Nominate a senior

Nominations are now being accepted for seniors to be recognized at the St. Andrew's Resources for Seniors System's 2017 Ageless Remarkable St. Louisans Gala. Each year, the event honors outstanding St. Louis area older adults, age 75+, for their many incredible contributions in their careers and in areas such as philanthropy and volunteer service. Nominations are being accepted through March 10 at www.standrews1.com. A printable version of the nomination form is also available via the website and may be completed and mailed to the St. Andrew's offices. Seniors from across the entire St. Louis metropolitan area are eligible for recognition at the 2017 gala Saturday, Oct. 28.

Ignatian Week

As part of Ignatian Heritage Week, St. Louis University campus ministry will present a lecture by Jesuit Father Bart Geger, talking on "How Magis Makes Sense of All Things Jesuit." The brown-bag lunch gathering will start at noon and end about 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, in the St. Francis Xavier (College Church) Ballroom.

Convent Crawl

The two-day "Convent Crawl" will give women, aged 18-40, a chance to visit religious sisters and experience their rich lives in community, in prayer and in ministries. The vocation retreat both will begin and end at the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in St. Louis, starting at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, and finishing at about 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18. In between will be visits to the School Sisters of Notre Dame and the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The Society of Helpers, Daughters of Charity, Sisters of Mercy and Adorers of the Blood of Christ also will participate in the "crawl." The cost is $25, with scholarships available. Seminary open house

Join the seminarians at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary, 5200 Glennon Drive in Shrewsbury, for an open house from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, March 5. This is an opportunity to meet the seminarians, tour the campus, learn about seminary life and pray in the Chapel of St. Joseph. Visit kenrick.edu/open-house for more information.

Student art collaboration on display

An art exhibition at Good Shepherd Gallery will feature Corporal Works of Mercy as seen through the eyes of second-, fourth- and seventh graders from Incarnate Word School in Chesterfield, Our Lady of Guadalupe in Ferguson and St. Cletus in St. Charles. Students will donate proceeds from the sale of the art to Catholic Charities. Funded by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, the exhibit is among activities in which students have engaged in the Three School Connection Project. The exhibit opens with a reception Sunday, March 5, 1-3 p.m. and runs Friday, March 31. The gallery address is 252 South Florissant Road in Ferguson.
