Welcoming the stranger

"Welcoming the Stranger," a series offering the stories of some of the nation's newest arrivals, will look at those "Here at Home" on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet motherhouse, 6400 Minnesota Ave. in south St. Louis. Jessica Mayo, a nonprofit immigration attorney and co-founder of the Migrant and Immigrant Community Action (MICA) Project, will share stories of immigrants and refugees seeking legal assistance from MICA and their efforts to make America their permanent home. The real deal for kids

"Raising Real Kids Despite Reality Television" is the topic of a presentation at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at De Smet Jesuit High School Theatre, 233 North New Ballas Road in Creve Coeur. Leah Darrow, an America's Next Top Model finalist, and Benedictine Father Augustine Wetta of the St. Louis Abbey will lead the program on how children can be built up instead of torn down by society's idea of the perfect image. Fontbonne hosts 'cyber warriors'

Fontbonne University will host the second annual GriffinHack on Saturday, March 4, and the inaugural Cyber Warrior Camp June 12-23, for freshmen through senior high school students. In GriffinHack, teams get a specific task, then work together to design an app and complete the challenge by the end of day. The top three teams receive scholarship prizes. Coaching clinic

The "Coach It Right" Baseball Clinic will be held from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 4, in the Danis Field House at St. Louis University High School. The clinic is free for baseball and softball coaches and parents and is presented by St. Louis University High School's baseball coach, Steve Nicollerat, and the St. Louis Sports Commission. Enkindle

Enkindle, a ministry run by the Office of Natural Family Planning of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, has available free monthly half-hour​ counseling sessions for anyone trying to conceive a child. The sessions are with a licensed professional counselor and a registered nurse. The upcoming dates for Enkindle appointments are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursdays, March 9, April 13 and May 11. Lenten Day of Recollection

A Lenten Day of Recollection will be held Saturday, March 11, at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, Lindell Boulevard and Newstead Avenue in the Central West End of St. Louis. The day begins at 10 a.m. and includes two spiritual conferences led by Archbishop Robert J. Carlson. Each conference will be followed by exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and an opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The day will end with evening vespers at 4:30 p.m. and the celebration of Mass at 5 p.m. The gathering is free, though goodwill offerings to help offset the cost of lunch will be accepted. Lenten prayer

"Stories from John's Gospel: A Lenten Morning of Prayer" will be given Monday, March 13, by Father Chuck Barthel at Mercy Center, 2039 N. Geyer Road in Frontenac. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the program is from 9 a.m. to noon. Father Barthel will reflect on stories from John's Gospel that help us prepare for the Triduum and Easter Celebration. The program will offer presentations woven with music and reflection. Father Barthel has served as pastor of Christ, Prince of Peace Parish in Manchester since 2008. He has a master's degree in spiritual theology and pastoral ministry from Kenrick-Glennon Seminary. Non-refundable registration is $25 and is due Feb. 24. Total cost, including registration is $35. Women for Christ

The 2017 Catholic Women for Christ Conference will be held Saturday, March 25, at the Touhill Performing Arts Center at the University of Missouri-St. Louis in Normandy. Sportsmanship scholarship

The St. Louis Sports Commission is accepting applications for its annual Carl Fricks Sportsmanship Scholarship. Unique to the region, $10,000 in scholarship money will be awarded to a graduating high school student from the St. Louis metro area who demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship in athletic competition. Administered by the Sports Commission Associates, the Sports Commission's young professionals group, the scholarship is part of the organization's ongoing effort to promote sportsmanship in the community. Candidates will be evaluated primarily for their approach and character in competition. Greatest consideration will be given to nominees who demonstrate a track record of sportsmanship and respect directed at opponents, officials and the spirit of the game.
