Since 1906, Father Dempsey’s Charities has provided transitional housing and a safe place to give a fresh start to men without a home. Today, our agency gives up to 78 residents a place to live and help with daily nourishment, getting a job, obtaining needed medical treatment, and accessing government benefits available due to military service, age, or disability. The average length of stay is two years.
Father Dempsey’s Charities offers guests a room equipped with a bed, lamp, and bedding. Bathrooms facilities are shared. Dinner is provided every evening for residents. On Saturdays breakfast is prepared by students and faculty from Chaminade Preparatory College and occasional Sundays breakfast is provided. SLU Campus Kitchen also helps provide meals on Monday, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Our mission is to be witnesses to the Gospel of Jesus Christ by providing transitional housing, food and social services for men and to feed the impoverished through the operation of our daily dinner all while maintaining the dignity of the human person.
Programs
Father Dempsey’s Charities primary service is transitional housing. By offering affordable room and board, men seeking a stable environment during a time of personal change receive helpful support in their transition to independent living. Employees staff the front desk 24 hours daily to fulfill both security and hospitality needs. Residents have a key to their own room. The home’s chapel is open to residents at all times.
