OBITUARY | Sister Kathleen Eggleston, CSJ

A funeral Mass for Sister Kathleen Ann Eggleston, CSJ, was to be held Oct. 20 at Nazareth Living Center. Sister Kathleen died Oct. 11 at Nazareth Living Center at the age of 86.

Sister Kathleen, baptized Annette, was born on Feb. 6, 1936, in St. Louis to parents G. B. and Mary T. (Myerscough) Eggleston. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1952 and was received into the novitiate on March 19, 1953. Sister Kathleen earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a minor in philosophy from Avila College in Kansas City in 1964 and a master’s degree in secondary education from the University of Hawaii in 1970.

Sister Kathleen served for more than 50 years in education. She taught at St. Elizabeth’s School in Kansas City from 1955-65. She then taught in St. Louis at St. Louis Cathedral School for two years and St. Edward School for one year. Sister Kathleen spent the next five years teaching grade school in Oahu, Hawaii, at St. Anthony and later St. Joseph. She returned to St. Louis Cathedral to teach in 1971.

Sister Kathleen transitioned to the secondary education level teaching at St. Francis de Sales High School in Denver, Colorado, and at St. Joseph Academy in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The next two years, she taught grade school in Colorado Springs at Divine Redeemer. She returned to St. Louis and taught high school at St. Anthony of Padua until 1980.

Sister Kathleen spent the next 20 years as a principal, serving at Valle Grade School in Ste. Genevieve, Immaculate Conception School in Union and Immaculate Conception School in Old Monroe.

At St. Ignatius of Loyola School in Marthasville, Sister Kathleen served as secretary and resource teacher. She served as a substitute teacher for Catholic schools the following year and finished her service in education at St. Vincent de Paul School in Dutzow as a learning consultant.

Sister Kathleen served two years as a volunteer receptionist at St. John’s Mercy Hospital in Washington. Retiring in 2008, Sister Kathleen could be found volunteering and sketching.

Since 2019, Sister Kathleen had resided at Nazareth Living Center carrying out her mission of prayer and presence.
