Welcome!

Dear Friends,

In this time of the year the Church is immersed in the mystery of the "Word made flesh."  We look upon the manger and are filled with awe that our God, overflowing with love, would embrace our human flesh.  We look upon the Holy Family and marvel at the mutual love, humility and peace that must have permeated every aspect of their daily living.  What a beautiful challenge for us to ponder as we celebrate this Christmas Season.
At the same time, we look to the New Year with renewed hope.  I recently visited a small, rural parish in North Dakota for a parish mission.  One evening I assisted the pastor in hearing Confessions for teenagers on retreat.  What a beautiful experience it was to see so many young people on fire for holiness, desiring to open their hearts fully to the will of God.  From North Dakota to Missouri and beyond, I see constant evidence that the Holy Spirit is guiding the hearts of our young people.
An open heart is crucial to discerning a vocation to the priesthood or religious life. Without an open heart, we cling to what we think our life should be.  With an open heart, I am willing to embrace what God has in mind for me, His will for my life.  At one time I am sure every priest or sister had dreams of marriage, family life and their ideal occupation.  But that openness of heart, guided by the Holy Spirit, enabled each of us to truly lay aside particular dreams of what life could be and embrace God's divine plan.  What results is the subtle, overwhelming joy in knowing I am living the life God has destined for me.  It may not be easy and it may involve sacrifice, but such could be said for marriage and generous single life as well.
As we continue to ponder the mystery of the Incarnation and embrace the blessings and challenges of the New Year, I pray that those discerning a vocation to the priesthood and religious life will truly have the courage to open their hearts to what God may have planned for them.  With the Eucharist as our source of strength and with the mantle of Our Lady around us, we have every confidence that we can joyfully fulfill the vocation the Lord is offering.  Of ourselves, we can accomplish little, but with God, all things are possible.
As we continue the "Year of the Priest", may St. John Vianney inspire young men and women to say "yes" with generous and open hearts.

Sincerely in Christ,

Msgr. Edward M. Rice
