Obituary | Sr. Carol Bialock, RSCJ

Sr. Bialock
Sister Carol Bialock, a Religious of the Sacred Heart who taught at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in St. Charles and at the Academy of the Sacred Heart “City House” in St. Louis, died May 3 in Atherton, California, at age 90.

Born in St. Louis, she attended the Academy of the Sacred Heart in St. Charles, and was greatly influenced by the legacy of St. Philippine Duchesne, adding the name Duchesne at her confirmation.

She graduated from Maryville University in 1949 with a degree in English, entered the Society of the Sacred Heart at Kenwood in Albany, New York, later that year and pronounced her first vows in 1952. She made her final profession in 1959. Sister Bialock earned a master’s degree in English from Saint Louis University and a master’s degree in pastoral ministry from Seattle University.

Besides teaching for 15 years at the Academy of the Sacred Heart and “City House,” she taught in Louisiana. For the next 13 years she did pastoral work in Chile. She also was the secretary of Bishop Carlos González of Talca. During Sister Bialock’s last years in Chile, 1978-81, she lived in Copiapó, a copper-mining town on the edge of the Atacama desert. She helped lead a large parish forming Christian communities and encouraging parish life.

In 1981, Sister Bialock was called to the motherhouse in Rome where she worked on the international communications team. She left in 1985 and returned to Copiapó to work with the Christian communities and to teach English to impoverished children.

Sister Bialock returned to the United States and worked as a caseworker and served on the board at the Georges Travis Women’s Center in San Jose, California. She was on staff and lived at the Catholic Worker in San Jose, where she managed the house and served meals to the homeless. Sister Bialock returned to St. Louis, where she taught at Holy Trinity Elementary School. The following year she moved to the Diocese of Venice, Florida, where she worked as a literacy training coordinator until 2001.

She had a large collection of published poetry.

In 2006, Sister Bialock went to Oakwood, the retirement community for the religious of the Sacred Heart in Atherton, California. Over the years, she came to know many students at Sacred Heart Schools in Atherton. A recent graduate of the school said that “the way she spoke about her education, about God, and about creation was like listening to someone write a love letter. … With immense grace, she was a constant reflection of the goodness in the world.”

Her health declined shortly after her 90th birthday a year ago. A memorial Mass will be held at the Oakwood chapel at a later date.
