A shelf cloud approached from the west over the Church of Saint Mary and Saint Louis (Abbey Church) in Creve Coeur on May 22. The church’s circular facade consists of three tiers of whitewashed, thin-poured concrete parabolic arches, with the top one forming a bell tower. The church was designed by Gyo Obata of Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum (HOK) with consultation by Italian architect and engineer Pier Luigi Nerv. Construction was completed in 1962, and the church was dedicated and blessed that year.

“He also said to the crowds, ‘When you see [a] cloud rising in the west you say immediately that it is going to rain — and so it does; and when you notice that the wind is blowing from the south you say it is going to be hot — and so it is. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not know how to interpret the present time?’”

— Luke 12:54-56
