Poetry in Music: for Better or for Verse - Masterworks Chorale season opening concerts, October 8-9
Masterworks Chorale presents a pair of concerts to kick off our 49th season (2022-2023) on October 8 and 9, 2022 in St. Louis and Metro East. Poetry in Music: for Better or for Verse will feature four centuries of a cappella repertoire and Baroque masterworks. The October 8 (Saturday) concert at 7:30 p.m. will take place at the Carmelite Monastery, 9150 Clayton Road, Ladue, MO; followed on October 9 (Sunday) at 3:00 p.m. at St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church, 1411 Cross Street, in O’Fallon, IL. Masterworks Chorale will perform vibrant European standards including works by Bach, Monteverdi, and Mendelssohn; selections from the Black spiritual tradition; and recent works by contemporary American composers, including Eric Whitacre and the esteemed Alice Parker. One of Southern Illinois’ finest performing organizations, the Masterworks Chorale was founded in 1974 by Dr. A. Dennis Sparger while a professor at Belleville Area College (now Southwestern Illinois College).Dedicated to excellence in choral music, the Chorale performs an annual concert series at venues throughout Metro East and Saint Louis. The Chorale also sponsors the Masterworks Children’s Chorus. Dr. Stephen Mager has served as the Masterworks Artistic Director and Conductor since 2009.
