About Certifications


RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CERTIFICATION POLICIES

The Office of Catholic Education and Formation of the Archdiocese of St. Louis issues various levels of certification for religion teachers, catechists and administrators in elementary and secondary Catholic schools and in parish schools of religion and parish programs. Certification is aimed at providing each teacher with theological competency, catechetical methodology, and personal spiritual formation. A person must be Catholic to be certified. Paul VI Pontifical Institute offers the core curriculum. Equivalent coursework from another accredited Catholic college/university/institute or certification from another diocese will be reviewed upon receipt by the Office of Catholic Education and Formation. Three certification levels are listed below. Each level builds upon the previous level(s).

LEVEL ONE CERTIFICATION

12 basic credits

Elementary School Religion Teacher

 + State teacher certification

 

Elementary PSR Catechist

Without state teaching certification

 

12 BASIC CREDITS FOR LEVEL ONE CERTIFICATION INCLUDE:

 

 

ST 101     BASIC CATHOLIC TEACHINGS – 2 credits

LT 101      CATHOLIC SACRAMENTAL AND LITURGICAL THEOLOGY—2 credits

MT101     FOUNDATIONS OF CATHOLIC MORALITY—2 credits

SS 101      INTRODUCTION TO SACRED SCRIPTURE—2 credits

SP 187      SPIRITUAL FORMATION—2 credits

RE 174     TEACHING RELIGION TO CHILDREN—2 credits

 

 

* Two additional elective credits in theology or catechetics are required every three years to maintain Level   One certification.

 

LEVEL TWO CERTIFICATION

24 Credits

[Level One Basic Certification +12 additional credits as indicated below]

 

Elementary Religious Education Specialist

For someone employed to teach in an elementary school as a full-time or half-time religion teacher 12 additional credits are required.

 

Elementary School Religion Coordinator

12 additional credits + a course on Administration of Catechetical Programs

 

Elementary School Principals require certification as School Religion Coordinator

 

Elementary Parish School of Religion (PSR) Coordinator

12 additional credits + a course on Administration of Catechetical Programs

 

12 ADDITIONAL CREDITS FOR LEVEL TWO CERTIFICATION INCLUDE:

 

 

ST   2 additional credits in systematic theology: e.g., Trinitarian theology, Christology, Mariology, Vatican II, Faith and Science, Treasures of the Holy Spirit, World Religions, Church History, Understanding the Mass

LT   2 additional credits in liturgical and sacramental theology: e.g., Liturgy of the Word with Children, The Saints and the Liturgical Year, Understanding the Mass

SP    2 additional credits in spirituality: e.g.: contemplative spirituality, The Lord’s Prayer, St. Francis De Sales, St.

                 Francis of Assisi, Discerning God’s Will

MT   2 additional credits in moral theology: e.g.: medical ethics, sexual morality, social justice.

SS     2 additional credits in Sacred Scripture, e.g., Hebrew Scriptures, Synoptic Gospels, St. John’s Gospel,  

                Revelation, Psalms, Paul’s Epistles

RE    2 additional credits in applicable catechetical methods for adolescents or teens or for students with special

                  needs, adult catechesis, or RCIA.

 

 

LEVEL THREE CERTIFICATION

36 credits

[Level Two requirements + 12 additional credits as in Level Two]

 

Adult Religious Education Coordinator

12 additional credits + a course on Administration of Catechetical Programs

 

High School Religion Teacher

M.A. in Theology or Religious Education

[OR]

Elementary Religious Education Specialist certification + 12 additional elective credits in theology - as suggested in Level Two.

 

Director of Religious Education

M.A. Religious Education or Theology

[OR]

Religion Coordinator certification + 10 additional elective credits in theology – as suggested in Level Two + 2 additional credits in catechetics as suggested in Level Two.

 

 

 

APPLICATION FOR CERTIFICATION

 

Application for certification is made through the Office of Catholic Education and Formation. CERTIFICATIONS ISSUED PRIOR TO 2019

 

Beginning in 2019 Level One certification will remain valid for 3 years from issue, at which time a 2 credit course will be taken for update. Level Two and Level Three certifications do not expire. Certifications issued prior to July 2019 will remain valid according to the dates indicated on the certification document. SP 187- Spiritual Formation will be the required course for Level One updates. If a student has SP 187 on their transcript, they can update with an elective theology or catechetics course.
