Obituary | Sr. Rosanna Marie Carter, FSM

Sr. Carter
Sister Rosanna Marie Carter, a Franciscan Sister of Mary for nearly 72 years, died April 13 at The Sarah Community in Bridgeton. She was 92.

Born in Clyde, Missouri, she entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Maryville in 1948. She received the name Sister Mary Eugenia and professed final vows in 1954.

Sister Rosanna was certified as a registered nurse through St. Anthony School of Nursing in Oklahoma City in 1954 and earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1968.

From 1954-67, she worked in accounting and payroll at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Oklahoma City. She served as assistant novice director and councilor at Mount Alverno Convent in Maryville, Missouri, from 1967-70.

From 1970-76 she was superior general of the Sisters of St. Francis of Maryville. For two years she worked in accounting at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Hannibal, Missouri. For five years she served as assistant administrator at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City.

With the reunification of the Sisters of St. Francis of Maryville and the Sisters of St. Mary as the Franciscan Sisters of Mary, Sister Rosanna served in St. Louis as receptionist at the SSM Data Center (later known as the SSM Information Center) from 1985-2000; and was receptionist for SSM Health Businesses from 2001-07. After retiring, she served part-time as sacristan of St. Mary of the Angels Convent. She moved to The Sarah Community in August 2010.

Sister Rosanna was famous for the jokes she shared with friends and colleagues. She also enjoyed listening to classical music, going to the symphony, observing nature and watching professional ice skating.

Survivors include a sister, Catherine L. Orosz of Greeley, Colorado. A memorial Mass will be scheduled as soon as feasible in the chapel at The Sarah Community. Burial was at Resurrection Cemetery.
