Obituary | Sr. Mary Philip Agnew, DC

A funeral Mass for Sister Mary Philip Agnew was celebrated Dec. 10 at Seton Residence Chapel in Evansville. A native of Perryville and a retired educator and mission services staff member at De Paul Health Center in Bridgeton, she died Dec. 5 at the Seton Residence.

Sister Mary Philip, 84, was a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul for 66 years. She was a 1953 graduate of St. Vincent High School in Perryville and entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis that December. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Marillac College in St. Louis, in 1964 and a master’s degree in English from DePaul University in Chicago in 1967.

In the St. Louis Archdiocese, Sister Mary Philip taught at St. Louise de Marillac School in Jennings from 1963-64 and was principal of Ursuline Academy in Kirkwood from 1986-95. She also taught in Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana and was a principal in Louisiana. She served as local community superior at two St Louis area residences.

Sister Mary Philip served in mission services at DePaul Health Center (now SSM Health DePaul Hospital) in Bridgeton from 1996 to 2007. She was awarded the Archbishop John L. May Award for Distinguished Health Care Ministry in 2003.

Sister Mary Philip served in a variety of ministries beginning in 2007, including membership on several boards and committees (2007 to 2014), as receptionist at the Provincial Office of the Province of St. Louise (2012 to 2015), and in the ministry of prayer at The Sarah Community in Bridgeton (2015-17). She moved to Seton Residence in Evansville in 2017.

Burial was at Marillac Cemetery in Normandy.
