OBITUARY | Sister Mary Rosanne Ewers, FSM

Sr. Ewers
Sister Mary Rosanne Ewers, a Franciscan Sister of Mary for nearly 76 years, died May 22 at The Sarah Community in Bridgeton. She was 97.

Martha Marie Ewers was born May 28, 1922, in St. Anthony, Missouri, one of 11 children to George C. and Mary (Volmert) Ewers. She moved to St. Louis in December 1938 and found a job at St. Mary’s Hospital, where she came to know the Sisters of St. Mary. She and a cousin, Marie (Sister Mary Evelyn Steinman), both entered the congregation on July 18, 1944. Martha received the name Sister Mary Rosanne and professed final vows Feb. 11, 1950.

Sister Rosanne worked at the motherhouse and at St. Mary’s Hospital, completing her high school education at St. Mary of the Angels Convent. From 1947-56, she served as a nurse assistant at St. Mary’s. She completed her bachelor’s degree in nursing at Saint Louis University in 1956. She then served as a clinical instructor at St. Mary’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri (1956-65), working to get the nursing school fully accredited and serving in the newborn nursery and pediatrics.

She served as pediatrics supervisor at St. Mary’s Hospital in Jefferson City, Missouri (1965-67), then at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center (1967-70). She supervised Central Service at Mount St. Rose Hospital from 1970-77. In spring 1977, she and Sister Martina Kliethermes were able to enjoy a trip to the Holy Land — a true high point for Sister Rosanne.

From 1977-83, she was an ambulatory care nurse at the motherhouse, then for 18 months she was part of an intercongregational community focusing on spiritual growth. From 1985-86, she served as a volunteer for the Family Plus program at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center and in the cardiology clinic.

From 1986-93, she was a nurse at St. Mary’s Ringling in Baraboo, Wisconsin. She retired in 1993, but remained in Baraboo until returning to St. Louis in 1998.

Sister Rosanne was known for her expert sewing skills. For many years after she retired, she worked in the convent’s sewing room, mending, sewing clothes, stitching labels in garments and removing them when needed.

Sister Rosanne is survived by four sisters, Sister Victoria Ewers, FSM, of St. Louis; Cordula Hibdon of Eugene, Missouri; Frieda Schaffer of Cary, North Carolina; and Mary M. Struemph of Jefferson City, Missouri.

A memorial Mass will be scheduled as soon as feasible in the chapel at The Sarah Community in Bridgeton. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery.
