OBITUARY | Sister Mary Amelie Hawxhurst, RSM

A funeral Mass was celebrated for Sister Mary Amelie Hawxhurst, RSM, June 22 in the chapel at Catherine’s Residence in St. Louis. Sister Mary Amelie died June 11 in St. Louis. A Sister of Mercy for 73 years, she was 91 years old.

Born in Evanston, Illinois, Sister Mary Amelie was the daughter of Erle Hawxhurst and Marie Amelie Miltenberger. She entered the Mercy community in Webster Groves, and earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Loyola University in New Orleans.

Sister Mary Amelie ministered mostly in education in Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, Arkansas and Missouri. She also did ministry in justice. She was a volunteer at Catherine’s House in Little Rock, Arkansas, 1997-2006. She was a volunteer caseworker at the Center for Women in Transition in Little Rock 2006-09.

She loved teaching and tutoring, especially students with special needs. In her spare time, she enjoyed bowling.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
