OBITUARY | Deacon Allen Conley

Private funeral services were held for Deacon Allen Conley on May 8. He died April 29 at the age of 93.

Deacon Conley was born in St. Louis on June 17, 1926, the first-born son of Alene Dawson Conley and Garnett Conley, Sr. Deacon Conley married Ermyntrude Flannigan, and they had two children, Durant and Diane.

Deacon Conley graduated from Vashon High School and Lincoln University. He received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, after which he began his career with the U.S. Postal Service, retiring after 37 years of service.

He was ordained to the permanent diaconate on June 5, 1999, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis by Archbishop Justin Rigali. Deacon Conley was then assigned to St. Elizabeth Mother of John the Baptist Parish, where he served until his retirement from ministry on Jan. 1, 2006. Deacon Conley’s time as permanent deacon included assisting at Mass, presiding over baptisms, hospital and nursing home visits, criminal justice ministry, and Communion services.

He is survived by his son, Durant, and daughter, Diane. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
