Pontifical Mission Societies

The Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) are a worldwide network at the service of the Holy Father to sustain the mission and the young Churches through prayer and charity.

They include:

"The four Societies - Propagation of the Faith, St. Peter the Apostle, Holy Childhood and the Missionary Union - have the common purpose of fostering a universal missionary spirit among the People of God... They bring to the Catholic world that spirit of universality and of service to the Church's mission, without which authentic cooperation does not exist." Pope St. John Paul II, Redemptoris Missio, 84

The Society for the Propagation of the Faith, the Missionary Childhood Association, and the Society of St. Peter the Apostle each have a solidarity fund. The graphic featured below explains how the universal solidarity funds work (from the international site).

About the 2022 Logo

This logo celebrating the 2022 year features many key missionary elements: the globe, the map of the United States, the missionary cross, the golden color that refers to the special anniversary year, and the colors of the five continents.

Its original form was designed by the National Office of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Brazil. With their permission, we have adapted it for our use in the celebratory year.

From the National Office in Brazil:

"The whole of art is in motion, expressing the missionary dynamism that springs from the Trinity, that is, the mission is one, it belongs to God (Missio Dei) and is born from the “fontal love of the Father” (AG 2), which is expands, communicates, comes out of itself and overflows without borders. The love of God is a free impulse, from the inside out, and of a way of being that has the divine life as its origin and end (Cf. DAp 348)."

The phrase the "The Church in a permanent state of mission" is quoted by Pope Francis in Evangelii Gaudium 25, referencing the Aparecida Document. The very identity of the Church is missionary (AG 2, LG 1).

"You shall be my witnesses" (Acts 1:8) is the theme chosen by Pope Francis for World Mission Sunday 2022.

"I mention these four Pontifical Mission Societies for their great historical merits, but also to encourage you to rejoice with them, in this special year, for the activities they carry out in support of the mission of evangelization in the Church, both universal and local. It is my hope that the local Churches will find in these Societies a sure means for fostering the missionary spirit among the People of God." Pope Francis, Message for World Mission Sunday 2022
