About Sister Maria Gertrud Uhr: Sister Maria Gertrud bespeaks a true German: resolute, sturdy and with a strong personality. This shows in her firm and hardy handshake. She was a sacristan for more than 50 years. She was hardworking, orderly, and because of that the chapel and sacristy were always sparkling clean. She was a very recollected and prayerful sister. Her eyes would radiate with joy and love when she would be before the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and would not miss any opportunity to adore. Adoration of our Eucharistic Lord was the number one priority for her. In the chapel, she was very reverent and proper. Whenever the bell in the chapel would ring because the sister in adoration needed to be relieved, she would always be the first one to answer the summons to relieve. She had to relinquish her sacristy work due to a fall. She underwent hip replacement surgery and began using a walker, which she did not like at all. However, nothing could stop her from keeping adoration. She would stand by the prie dieu for 30 minutes or would take her walker and sit on it before the adoration kneeler. Before the fall, she was physically strong and never had to go to a doctor. Her secret? Apples! She was wont to say that “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” In her case it proved true. She would be incredibly happy when the sisters would send her peeled apples, ready to eat, while she was in the hospital or rehabilitation center. Despite being 91 years old, she is still strong and healthy, even though she is now confined in bed. However, her hidden life of prayer and sacrifice continues to be spent for the sanctification of priests and the salvation of souls.
