We have a full-time opportunity available as an External Communications Manager in the Office of Strategic Communications and Planning. This role is responsible for executing and managing the external & digital communications strategies for the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Reporting to the Executive Director of Strategic Communications and Planning, the manager exemplifies professionalism and a high proficiency in external messaging best practices. This includes, but is not limited to:
•Crisis communications and reputation management
•Engagement with media as a spokesperson
•Written external media releases
•Oversee management of archdiocesan social media channels and website
•Production support of all photo and video materials
Collaborating with the Internal Communications Manager and Director of Publications, the External Communications Manager leads a team with two direct reports that produces and disseminates clear, cohesive messaging that promotes, enhances, and protects the Church’s mission. Strong organizational skills and the ability to foster positive relationships on every level throughout and beyond the Archdiocese of St. Louis are essential.
Many functions will be executed in conjunction with the Executive Director of Strategic Communications and Planning, the Internal Communications Manager, and Director of Publications to foster a team environment with the primary goal of elevating the archbishop’s vision and pastoral priorities in accordance with the Catholic Church’s teachings on missionary discipleship and social communications. As such, the candidate should be a practicing Catholic with a strong knowledge of the Catholic faith and a desire to continue to modernize communications channels in the mission to evangelize with the teachings of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
•Coordinate requests from both Catholic and non-Catholic external media outlets/vendors (print, radio, tv, film, social media, etc.).
•Lead agent in drafting and reviewing scripts for the Archbishop and other archdiocesan leaders, drafting and reviewing media alerts and releases, organizing media opportunities, and scouting opportunities to pitch stories coming out of various offices, agencies, and parishes of the archdiocese to the secular media.
•Serve as a spokesperson for the archdiocese when called upon, articulating prepared messaging and acting in the best interests of the Catholic Church, the Archdiocese of St. Louis and the Archbishop of St. Louis. Foster relationships with media as a point of contact for the archdiocese.
Other External/Digital Communications:
•Engage with parishes, religious orders, and other recognized Catholic entities in their communications efforts. Counsel clergy and other parish and school staffs on best practices and crisis communications.
•Support in communications planning and execution for the many offices of the archdiocese, acting as a trusted advisor in communications best practices, most notably with the new strategic planning effort, acting as a liaison to the Office of the Vicar for Strategic Planning. This includes, but is not limited to, the management of vendors in both marketing and video production.
•Monitor and guide social media content creation and responses to support messaging and manage the archdiocese’s reputation.
•Work with the Internal Communications Manager to ensure internal circulation of announcements before external release, identify internal messaging that should be shared externally and regulate and enforce the archdiocesan brand standards throughout the Curia offices and agencies, parishes, and schools.
•Promote archdiocesan-wide events and/or initiatives by preparing creative and informative content to be shared externally.
•Oversee e-mail marketing efforts for all archdiocesan entities to centralize branding, messaging, and content.
•Manage brand standards from a marketing perspective, ensuring uniformity while encouraging creative design.

Knowledge & Experience Requirements
•Bachelor’s degree in media, public relations, communications, or related field plus 5-7 years of relevant work experience.
•Highly organized and detail-oriented with excellent project management skills.
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
•Practicing Catholic with a strong grasp of Catholic teaching, theology, history, and public policy positions.
•Excellent managerial skills, acting as a servant-leader to a team of two.
•Strategic thinking skills in high-profile communications, strategic planning, and creative solutions.
•Strong ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, internal and external partners across the archdiocese. Ability to work cross-functionally understanding all the stories we have to tell and systematically, thoughtfully and creatively weave these stories into the right platforms in a cadence that makes the most sense.
•Ability to remain calm and level-headed in crisis situations while leading/advising others on appropriate communications and next steps.
•Knowledge of SEO, keyword research and Google Analytics. Experience measuring and making recommendations using performance measurement tools and metrics.
•Graphic design and/or video production experience a plus.
