Position Summary:

The Director of Youth Ministry provides leadership and direction for equipping young people as missionary disciples and providing tools and training for those who serve youth at a local level. The Director will oversee the framework, development and implementation of Youth Ministry programs that carry out the mission of CYA to help all young people hear and respond to the Gospel message and participate in the life and mission of His Church.

This role helps strengthen the youth ministry through onsite support to parishes, youth ministry leaders and volunteers, as well as event and program planning, and collaboration with other offices and institutions throughout the community. We seek to empower young people to live as disciples of Jesus, draw young people to the Church and foster their spiritual growth.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the primary representative to the Office of Youth Ministry (OYM) community and support of the non-school based outreach to youth from elementary age to high school age and will set the direction and strategy of the OYM. Serves as the liaison between movements that serve youth in the Archdiocese and the Senior Director of CYA.
  • Supports parish youth ministry and its leaders including clergy, parish employees,volunteers and youth ministers through on site visits and consultations,communication of youth ministry events, provides training to youth ministers and consults with parishes regarding youth ministry. As needed, will provide staffing assistance for open youth minister positions.
  • Ensures proper training, certification and skills for those serving in youth ministry throughout the Archdiocese. Ensures compliance with Archdiocesan policies related to youth ministry.
  • Collaborates with the Associate Director, provides leadership and direction to the OYM staff in alignment with the CYA mission and works with the team to provide guidance,feedback and development on performance.
  • Develops relationships with other ministry groups that impact youth such as Vocations and Respect Life, Safe Environment, and the Office Education and Formation. Works with the Senior Director to find alignment and synergies that will benefit the OYM mission.
  • Establish inter-cultural competency training for youth ministers, focused especially on under-served and rapidly growing demographics within the Archdiocese of St.Louis
  • Plans and promotes participation in youth ministry events including: Project Life, Steubenville, Adult Youth Leader Retreat, Generation Life, Catholic Scouting events, the Totus Tuus program and other events as needed.
  • Responsible for preparing the annual budget for approval by the Senior Director and tracking expenses against it throughout the year to ensure budget compliance.
  • Oversees the Office of Youth Ministry website and database and requests updates when appropriate.

Knowledge & Experience Requirements:

  • Practicing Catholic with knowledge of the Catholic Church, its structures, and how it functions;familiarity with its institutions.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in Theology, Religious Education or comparable theological field. If not, preferably should have a certificate in youth ministry in addition to Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience, specific to the ministry.
  • Solid knowledge of Church teaching, catechetical documents and current developments in youth ministry as well as understanding of current social issues impacting today’s youth.
  • Experience leading and managing a team and ensuring accountability to department goals.
  • Intercultural competency training or equivalent experience. Spanish language ability is preferred, but not required.

  • Solid inter personal skills that guide, influence and persuade others both internally to the Curia and externally in the Archdiocese, while also exercising sensitivity to the audience.
  • Highly self-motivated individual who is passionate about ministering to young people and empowering others to do the same.
  • Must have strong organizational skills to manage multiple priorities.
