Accounting Assistant

Position Summary

Applies principles of accounting to assist in preparing of financial reports by performing the following duties.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Compiles financial information as assigned to prepare journal entries for the accountants to review and post to the general ledger.
  • Reviews information and prepares entries for posting to subsidiary application systems. Sub-systems include accounts receivable, asset management and accounts payable.
  • Serves as backup for real estate transfers, FACTS processing (i.e., tuition), and Importxe uploads.
  • Assists in the preparation of specifically identified general ledger account reconciliations, including but not limited to real estate corporation.
  • Downloads assigned reports, cash receipts, and AP items for monthly processing.
  • Assists as necessary with the unclaimed property process.
  • Aids with the preparation of audit back-up selections.
  • Prepares or assists in preparing special reports as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Knowledge & Experience Requirements

  • Associate degree from a two-year college and two years related experience and /or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word.

Skills & Attitudes Required for Success in Job

  • Language Skills - Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Mathematical Skills – Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages.
  • Reasoning Ability – Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Technical Skills – Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word. Experience with Infor/Lawson accounting software is considered a strong plus.
  • General - Well organized, extremely efficient and pro-active. Ability to meet deadlines and preferably ahead of schedule. Ability to take on special projects without sacrificing the quality of the normal workload. Anticipate the needs of directors or manager by providing financial reports or spreadsheets. Needs minimal supervision.
