Sr. MohrhausA memorial Mass for Sister Aline Mohrhaus was celebrated Feb. 24 at Nazareth Living Center Chapel in south St. Louis County. Sister Aline died Feb. 15 at Nazareth. She was 89.
Born in Cincinnati, Sister Aline entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1948 and made her final profession in 1956. She received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Fontbonne College in 1959 and a masters’ degree in education/reading from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1974.
Sister Aline taught in several of her community’s schools across the province. In the St. Louis Archdiocese, she served at Immaculata (1952-54), St. Margaret of Scotland (1954-60), St. Jude (1960-63), St. Anthony of Padua (1967-69), St. Mary in Bridgeton (1971-80), St. Clare of Assisi in Ellisville (1981-83), and St. Cletus in St. Charles (1983-85). In all those schools, she taught primary grades and usually was the primary coordinator responsible for curriculum and guiding the teachers.
She also taught in Wisconsin, Texas and Kansas City. She used various techniques to hold the children’s attention. Sister Aline had plants and animals and had the children experience eggs hatching and playing with guinea pigs. In 1986, she was named the winner in the “Excellence in Teaching” Awards Program for the Greater Kansas City area. Summers were filled with teaching vacation bible school.
Survivors include two sisters, Jeanne A. Coykendall and Peggy Payne, both of Indianapolis. Sister Aline donated her body to science.
