Obituary | Sister Rose Maureen Mahoney, FSM

A funeral Mass for Sister Rose Maureen Mahoney, FSM, will be celebrated Monday, Oct. 2 at the chapel at The Sarah Community in Bridgeton. Sister Rose Maureen, a Franciscan Sister of Mary for 63 years, died September 27 at The Sarah Community. She was 83.

She was born Virginia Anne Mahoney on March 22, 1934, in Hannibal, Mo., one of two children born to J. Frank and Rose C. Mahoney. Her brother is Father Robert J. Mahoney.

Sister Rose Maureen entered the Sisters of St. Mary in 1954 and professed final vows September 8, 1962. (In 1987 the Sisters of St. Mary reunited with the Sisters of St. Francis of Maryville, Mo., as the Franciscan Sisters of Mary.)

She earned a bachelor's in medical records administration from St. Louis University in 1960 and a master's in health service management from Webster University in 1983.

She served as assistant director of medical records at St. Mary's Health Center and taught medical records administration at St. Louis University (1960-63). She directed medical records at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Charles (1963-67), then at St. Mary's Health Center for a year. In 1968, she coordinated medical records for St. Mary's Infirmary's Detoxification Center.

From 1968 to 1977, she was director of medical records at St. Eugene Hospital in Dillon, S.C. She coordinated ambulatory and emergency outpatient records at Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital (1978-79). From 1979 through 1985 she was health care consultant for Cardinal Glennon and St. Mary on the Mount. She provided consultation on health information management and medical records until retiring in 2008.

She coauthored the 7th edition of "Understanding Medical Terminology"; for 25 years she produced new editions of the book, ultimately becoming sole author. She moved to The Sarah Community in May 2010.

Sister Rose Maureen is survived her brother, Father Robert J. Mahoney of Kansas City, Mo. Burial will take place at Resurrection Cemetery in St. Louis immediately following the Mass.
