Obituary | Fr. David Corrigan, SJ

Fr. Corrigan
A funeral Mass for Jesuit Father J. David Corrigan was celebrated March 12 at St. Francis Xavier (College) Church in Midtown St. Louis.

Father Corrigan died March 6 in St. Louis. He was 82, a Jesuit for 65 years and a priest for 52 years.

Born in Springfield, Ill., he attended St. Louis University High School and entered the Society of Jesus at St. Stanislaus Seminary in Florissant in 1952. He pronounced first vows two years later. He was ordained a priest in 1965 at St. Mary’s College, St. Marys, Kan., and pronounced final vows in 1969 at Regis University in Denver.

Father Corrigan earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy at St. Louis University. He studied theology at St. Mary’s College in St. Marys, Kan., earning the bachelor degree in sacred theology. He also received a master’s degree in theology from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.

Father Corrigan began his priestly ministry as a high school teacher, first at St. Louis University High School from 1967-69, then at Regis Jesuit High School and in campus ministry at Regis University, both in Denver. He served in campus ministry and as a teacher at Parks College in St. Louis from 1975-79.

From the early 1980s, Father Corrigan devoted himself to pastoral ministry in several locations. At one point he was chaplain or pastoral minister at three places at the same time. He served as chaplain at St. Joseph Hospital and St. Ann’s Health Center, both in the St. Louis area, and as assistant pastor at St. Teresa of Child Jesus in Belleville, Ill., and Immaculate Conception in Kaskaskia, Ill., and as pastor at St. Benedict Parish in Doniphan, Mo.

Father Corrigan’s father, John James Corrigan, was an announcer in St. Louis at KXOK radio, and his son inherited his mellow, resonant bass voice. He continued to celebrate Mass, often at Beauvais Manor in south St. Louis, even after moving to the Jesuit retirement community, the Fusz Pavilion, in 2012.

Survivors include a brother, Michael Corrigan, and a sister, Sister Judith Ann Corrigan, SSND. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
