OBITUARY | Father Charles Deister

A funeral Mass for Father Charles Deister will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 21, at St. Stephen Protomartyr Church in St. Louis. Father Deister died July 13 at Mother of Good Counsel Home in St. Louis. He was 83.

Born in St. Louis on Nov. 30, 1936, to Charles J. and Gertrude (Vorholt) Deister, he was baptized at St. Cecilia Parish in St. Louis. Father Deister attended St. Mary’s High School, Cardinal Glennon College and Kenrick Seminary. Cardinal Joseph Ritter ordained him to the priesthood on March 30, 1963, at the St. Louis Cathedral.

Father Deister was assistant pastor at St. Rose in St. Louis from 1963-67, while serving as a part-time religion teacher at De Andreis High School, where he remained until 1965. In 1967, he became a full-time associate pastor at Christ the King in University City. He was an associate pastor at Epiphany in St. Louis from 1969-79, associate pastor at Immaculate Heart of Mary in St. Louis from 1979-80, and associate pastor of Ascension Parish in Chesterfield from 1980-84.

From 1984-89, Father Deister served as pastor of St. Anthony Parish in Sullivan. He was pastor of St. Boniface in St. Louis from 1989-94. In 1994, he became part-time senior priest in service at St. Monica in Creve Coeur, also serving on the staff of the archdiocesan Metropolitan Tribunal.

In 1999, he was named senior associate pastor at St. Joseph Parish in Kimmswick. In 2002, he served at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Florissant, and then as senior associate pastor at St. Mary Magdalen in St. Louis. In 2003, Father Deister was named chaplain at Sancta Maria in Ripa, the motherhouse of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. He retired in 2012.

Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
