February 2009: Zambia - A Simple Message of Love |

Ask Sister Ruby who her neighbor is, and be prepared for a list.
But right at the top, she’ll tell you, are orphans and vulnerable children.
This Missionary Sister of the Congregation of the Immaculate Conception is the Director of the Home of Joy in Lusaka, Zambia. There, she and the Sisters in her community offer a home and an education to orphans and children at risk.
“These children who have lost their natural parents or whose parents are dying need to be loved and accepted by others,” Sister Ruby explains. “Our work requires providing the basic necessities of life. But above all, it is our actions that must help these young people feel that loving acceptance. It is what the Lord Himself would show them.”
Her Religious Community, she says, has as its charism to “preach the Good News to the poor in simplicity and love.”
“To be called to be a Sister was a great privilege in my life,” Sister Ruby explains. “To do this work for these children is my profound joy.”
