Daniel is a member of the Daily Worldmissionnaires, and has participated in the program since 1978.
My devotion to the missions began as early as grade school when I was encouraged to save my pennies to send to the missions. In high school, one of my classmates became a Maryknoll priest and I was very impressed by that. I married in 1961 and my wife and I seriously discussed joining the missions through PAVLA. After much reflection, we decided it was not for us. We did, however, go on to have nine children and nineteen grandchildren.
Each week, we faithfully sent $5.00 to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. At that time, Bishop Sheen was the moderator and we received a “Thank You” note each week signed by him. When my father passed away in 1973, I sent $1,500.00 of my inheritance to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith to support the education of a priest.
About the same time, Bill Jochens, a member of Mary, Queen of Peace, invited me to attend a Daily Worldmissionaires recruitment dinner. From then on, I contributed half my lunch allowance and my wife matched it.
Now that we are retired and living in Florida, I am still an active Daily Worldmissionnaire even though my contributions have diminished.
Being an active Daily Worldmissionnaire is a way of life for me as you can see from the history I have shared with you. As much as I would have liked to physically participate in the missions, I feel being an active Daily Worldmissionnaire is the next best thing. I would also like to share the fact that in April 2008, I was diagnosed with cancer metastases of the colon to the lung. Please remember me in your prayers.
