Kacie is a Junior at Nerinx Hall High School and a member of Queen of All Saints Parish. She participated in the March 2008 Uxpanapa, Mexico Immersion Trip with Nerinx Hall, St. John Vianney, and St. Mary’s students.
Where can I begin. This trip has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life so far. It is probably the happiest I have been in a very long time. I am so blessed with opportunities at Nerinx. I am truly thankful I got to go on the trip. I learned so much about myself, not to mention the culture of La Chinantla. Let me begin by saying a few words about my job assignment.
I was assigned to build a cement basketball court for the week. I was so excited because I saw how much fun every one was having on the court that already existed. I knew I was going to be a part of something big. We began by leveling the ground to prepare it for cement. It was tedious work, but by the end of the day I really felt like I had accomplished something. For the rest of the week, we poured concrete. I had the wheelbarrow job. A man poured cement in my wheelbarrow and I delivered it to the correct spot. I had so much fun with this job because I was able to speak Spanish with the men that were helping us. It was a really fun work environment too. I still keep in touch with one of the main men I was working with, Mario. He was one of my best friends in Mexico because I was his main translator. It was easy for me to make friends because I spoke the language well. Although the Mexicans were friendly with or without knowledge of Spanish.
I think one of the most rewarding aspects of the trip was being able to form really strong friendships in such a short time. Sometimes in St. Louis we take advantage of the time we have in high school to meet new people and make new friends, but in Mexico, because the time is so limited, it is important to be bubbly from the beginning. I feel really lucky to have made so many new friends. I am actually keeping in touch with a few of them through email. I miss them a lot, but I am hoping I will see them again next year. With that said, I will end with a quote...
Missing someone becomes easier every day, because even though you are getting farther since the last time you saw them, you're getting closer to the next time you will see them again.
