What motivated you to work with people in a foreign mission country?

GennaI have always been fascinated with traveling and seeing how others live. When I was given the opportunity to travel to Guatemala, I knew that it would be a great experience because I love helping others and it would be a good way to see another part of the world. I did not really need “motivation” to go-I begged my parents and paid for the trip myself. In a way, the trip motivated me to work hard here in the states. After the trip I felt so rewarded because I knew that my hard work at home paid for a life changing event that I will never forget.

What was your best and most meaningful experience while volunteering in a foreign mission country?

The whole trip to Guatemala was so meaningful and I took so many life lessons away from it. I learned about a new culture and the way so much of the world lives. One thing that really shocked me while we were there was the generosity of the family whom we were building a house for. This family was one of the most positive, helpful and caring families I have met. They were always waiting for us outside in the morning with a smile on their face ready to help in any way they could. They were in such a bad situation living in poverty but they chose to see the glass half full everyday.

What impact has volunteering abroad had on the way you live your everyday life?

GennaAfter spending time in Guatemala, I have tried to live my life a little more simply. The Guatemalans showed me something very important: money does not buy happiness. They find the simple joys in life. Since I have returned, I have tried to help others a little more. I have realized that so many people in this world need help and nothing is going to change unless we change our ways. My service trip to Guatemala has changed my whole perspective on life and now I know what I want to do when I grow up: I want to make a difference in the world.
