Mexico - A Life Changing Experience Print E-mail
Wednesday, 23 April 2008

Matt is a Junior at St. Mary’s High School and a member of St. Mark’s Parish. He participated in the March 2008 Uxpanapa, Mexico Immersion Trip with Nerinx Hall, St. John Vianney, and St. Mary’s students.

MattHaving this opportunity to go help fellow Americans, down in a suffering country, Mexico, was a life changing experience. This trip helped me understand the problems of men respecting women and immigration that happen every day in Mexico. I now realize the pain and suffering the Mexican people go through daily. Many Mexican men away in the United States and their families wonder when and if they will ever see them again. This made me see that the life I have is so privileged compared to any of the Mexicans that I met. By going on this trip it opened my eyes to new things, including new types of food, housing, and daily life in Mexico.

While in Mexico I, along with three other St. Louis students and two Mexican artists painted a wonderful large mural of Mexicans playing all sorts of sports including surfing, soccer, volleyball, basketball, skateboarding, rock climbing, baseball and swimming. The chance I had to leave behind my talent of painting made me feel glad that many people will get to see my work everyday. The whole trip changed me, since now I notice Mexico in a different way and learned so much from the Mexicans. If you ever get this life changing opportunity go for it. The fun experience of staying in a Mexican family’s house and the celebration of the Easter Vigil, in Spanish, with fellow Americans just set the fun beginning to the week of service that I did.
