Bienvenidos de San Salvador! Print E-mail
Thursday, 03 April 2008

Katie Doerr is a 2004 graduate of Saint Louis University and is currently a 4th year medical student at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. She is volunteering in El Salvador through May 2008.

Andy and KatieBienvenidos de San Salvador! Everything is going very well here. We arrived on Sunday successfully. We are staying with a friendly Salvadoran family in la Colonia Miravalle, a small neighborhood close to the national university. During the day, I attend class at the Centro de Intercambio y Solidaridad. It is a one on one Spanish class with a former Jesuit seminarian and we discuss topics ranging from the political climate to the religious tendencies of Salvadoran students.
While I study, Andy travels to various clinics and hospitals with Salvadoran doctors and participates in the care of patients. In the afternoons, we take various field trips to Salvadoran cultural and historical sites like the University of Central America, where the six Jesuits were assasinated in 1989. It is a bit overwhelming, but we are learning, experiencing and taking in everything around us.

Katie and Andy, Buenos Dias, It sounds like you are enjoying yourselves and making an impact in your own special way. The weather is changing here in the STL for the better and so far the Cards are doing fairly well. The parish is as active as ever. You both are a part of my daily thoughts and prayers, be safe and I'll see you soon (relatively).

Hi Katie and Andy,
Since our plans for hosting you here at the border were disrupted it's great to be able to share in this adventure. What a wonderful opportunity that I know will foster your commitment for service to those most in need! Please say a prayer for me and for our ministries here at la otra frontera when you visit Mons. Oscar Romero's grave.
Con carino y abrazos fuertes,
Janet
