Joe Walterbach is a religion and history teacher at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School in Manchester, Missouri. He is a Kennedy graduate.
In my classroom, the mission box has become a very important part of the classroom. To date, the classes have raised over $400.00. While we are short of our goal ($1,000) the students have been very generous with giving. Last week alone we raised $172.34! My advisory is in charge of counting the money and coming up with ways to make the mission box noticeable to all.
After spring break all classes are having a "penny war" competition. The winning class will receive a pizza party on the outdoor bleachers in the spring sunshine. We are splitting the money up to help current Kennedy students and alumni. Half of the money is going to Bolivia for a new Catholic Church that Fr. Brian Fischer, a Kennedy graduate, is currently helping to build, and the other half is going to a Honduran orphanage where a group of our students are going to serve this summer.
Starting after spring break, the classes are going to be spending time each week looking at Fr. Brian Fischer’s blog about his experiences in Bolivia. As one student said, "It is great that current Kennedy students are trying to help an alumni of Kennedy who is located in a different country.” With the determination and contributions from the Kennedy community, God's call to service is becoming an integral part of our Christian character.
