March 2007 - Father Thomas Shaughnessy, SSC of the Columbans Visits the Mission Office |

In March 2007, the Mission Office was blessed to receive Father Thomas Shaughnessy, SSC of the Missionary Society of St. Columban as a visitor. Father Tom is the Mission Office’s contact person with the Missionary Society of St. Columban.
The Columbans, as they are popularly known, were founded in Ireland in 1916 and came to the United States just a few years later. They are the Irish equivalent of what Maryknoll is to the United States as regards the foreign missions. At its peak, there were 1,000 Columban missionaries. At present, there are about 500.
Father Tom served as a missionary in the Philippines for 23 years. Since 2003, he has served as the contact person in the United States for the Missionary Cooperation Appeal Plan. Father Tom gave the Mission Office brochures about a new religious education program for kindergarten through eighth grade concerning missionary education. It is called “Journey With Jesus: Where Will We Go?”. This exciting new program is due to be completed in late 2007 or early 2008.
The Missionary Society of St. Columban is a missionary entity that the Mission Office helps through the annual Missionary Cooperation Appeal Plan. It is a pleasure to work with Father Tom and other missionaries from the Columbans. Together, we are happy to support the missionary work of the Church worldwide. Please remember the Columban Missionaries in your prayers!
