Over 23 schools across the nation participated in an Internet Safety Night videoconference hosted by St. Clement of Rome School in Des Peres. This national event afforded adults the chance to discuss with experts and peers topics such as online predators, cyberbullying, identity theft, and other Internet-related issues to answer the question, “How can I help my family minimize risk and maximize safety?”
Missouri experts who came to St. Clement to present were Lt. Joe Laramie, Director of Missouri’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, and Cherisse Thibault, from Missouri KidsFirst. Other guest speakers, joining via videoconference, were Chris Pickering, of the Missouri Department of Corrections (former Prosecutor with the Missouri Attorney General’s Office), and Randy Raw from MOREnet in Columbia.
“This is such an important issue – it is absolutely critical for kids, parents and community members to be on the same page with regard to online safety,” said Randy Raw, Manager of Network Security at MOREnet. “The Internet is a fantastic learning tool, but like any tool, people need to understand what the risks are and how to use it safely.”
The evening was presented at no charge to parents by RoundTrips, an organization that provides video conference programs to schools, and MOREnet.
After the videoconference our St. Clement parents said “It was awesome, very impressive,” and, “That was so good, I wish it would have lasted longer.”

Saint James Principal Receives the Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Award
St. James Principal Karen Battaglia holds the Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Award, while St. James students hold several of the school’s past Mission Awards.
Miss Karen Battaglia, principal of St. James the Greater School in Dogtown, received the Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Award for her outstanding dedication to the Holy Childhood Association. The award was presented at the Holy Childhood Association Mass on October 1, 2009. Miss Battaglia is the third recipient of this honor, and the first lay principal to receive the award.
“This is a true honor for the entire school. Both the students and faculty at St. James have demonstrated a long history of support for the missions through the Holy Childhood Association,” Miss Battaglia said. She went on to say that, “One of the biggest ways that we support the missions is through our annual Mission Carnival. The entire St. James community comes together for this event. The sole purpose of the carnival is to raise money for the missions.”
The 12th Annual St. James Mission Carnival was held on Thursday, October 29, 2009. Students could ‘dress down’ for the day by purchasing a "jeans pass." In addition, school parents arrived early in the day to cook a special lunch for the students. Afterwards, the entire student body had a great time at the carnival. The event was a huge success, raising over $1425.00 in one afternoon!
