ST. LOUIS – Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson, Archbishop of St. Louis, will offer a Mass of Reparation at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis for the sins of clergy sexual abuse in the Catholic Church on Friday, September 7, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.
In Catholic tradition, an act of reparation is a prayer or devotion with the intent to ask God for pardon and forgiveness not only for one’s own offenses but for the sins of others as well. The Church is considered to be the mystical body of Christ, and as such, Catholics understand that one person’s sin has an effect on the entire body.
In a statement released following the disturbing grand jury report detailing clergy sexual abuse in Pennsylvania, Archbishop Carlson said he would be “inviting the priests of the Archdiocese of St. Louis to join [him] in offering Masses for all victims of sexual abuse.” Several Catholic parishes around St. Louis have already offered Masses of Reparation or other devotions.
This Mass of Reparation is open to the public. A Holy Hour, Confessions, and the singing of the Divine Mercy Chaplet will follow Mass.
