Catholics respond to diaper drive

Archdiocese Catholics have filled a necessary need for young families or mothers, contributing 185,000 diapers to the annual deacon's Lenten Diaper Drive — 60,000 more than the total of 125,000 collected in 2016. Over three weekends, culminating on Easter Sunday, the Office of the Diaconate coordinated parishes' collections throughout the Archdiocese of St. Louis, with the diapers either becoming part of parishes' ministries or going to local social service agencies of families or mothers in need.

Catholic school teacher receives Emerson grant

Holy Cross Academy teacher Jennifer Jung has been awarded a $10,000 Emerson Gold Star grant to expand STEM curriculum. The grant will help fund portable "thinking" boxes, or kits, which will include technology for students to collect, graph, analyze and share data. Emerson also gave Holy Cross a $5,000 grant. Jung, who was eligible for the grant as a 2015 Emerson Excellence in Teaching award winner, teaches third grade on Holy Cross's St. Dominic Savio campus.

Fontbonne awards STEM scholarships

Anna Luhmann, a John F. Kennedy Catholic High School senior, and Paul Morrison, a St. John Vianney High School senior, are among six incoming freshman who have been named 2017 STEM Scholars at Fontbonne University. In addition to $10,000 annual scholarships for four years, Morrison and Luhman will participate in service activities, internships and community outreach. Morrison plans to major in bioinformatics and Luhman plans to major in computer science. The awards are funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Criminal justice

An event recognizing supporters of the Criminal Justice Ministry and raising funds to fill a budget gap created by state funding cuts will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 1, at Moulin Events, 2017 Chouteau Ave. in St. Louis. Archbishop Robert J. Carlson, Nestlé Purina and Nancy McCarthy are among the honorees. The mission of the Criminal Justice Ministry is "to bring Christ's message of compassion, reconciliation and hope through person-to-person response to the needs of prisoners, their families, those recently released from prison, victims and others involved in the justice system within the St. Louis Archdiocese." For reservations or information, visit www.stlouisreview.com/bLG or contact Anthony D'Agostino at (314) 503.1770 or [email protected]. To donate or volunteer with the ministry, visit www.cjmstlouis.org.
